Background Information
From February 20-22, 2004, the Illinois State University (ISU) chapter of the Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) will be hosting the Nuclear Reality Conference (NRC), in Normal, Illinois.

Existing Clinton Nuclear Reactor
The existing Clinton nuclear reactor is owned and operated by Exelon Corp.
We decided to organize this conference because the Exelon Corporation has plans to build a second nuclear reactor in Clinton, Illinois—located 25 miles away from ISU. If Exelon succeeds in building a new reactor the door will be opened to building many more reactors, as called for in the energy plan pushed by the Bush Administration.

As Dr. Angelo Capparella—biology professor and SEAC’s faculty advisor—stated, "Nuclear energy is 'clean' only if one ignores reality." The conference will address urgent issues surrounding nuclear power and available clean energy solutions.

We are seeking broad participation from student groups across the Midwest region as well as established nuclear watchdog organizations. Some of the organizations already committed include: Environmental Law & Policy Center, Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Nuclear Energy Information Service, SEAC National, Energy Justice Network, Nukewatch, Ecology Action Center, No New Nukes, and the Illinois Student Environmental Network.

Have questions?
Chat with the organizers! Use AIM (instant messenger) and send a message to the ScreenName nukereality. Status: OFFLINE
We believe this conference will provide those who participate with a solid background by which to oppose this long-term threat to our public health and safety. All who wish to become better educated about nuclear power are welcome to attend. If you plan on attending, please register so that we can arrange proper accommodations. For those unable to attend, please feel free to make a donation to help cover the cost of the conference. For additional information, please check back regularly.

Conference Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote environmental justice and to protect public health and safety by educating citizens about the many dangers inherent to the nuclear power industry, while simultaneously offering information about available clean energy solutions.
