STUDENT GROUP TO RAISE FUNDS FOR UNIVERSITY GREEN TEAM

On April 19, at the Illinois State University Earth Day Celebration, a fundraiser will be held to send an administrator of the Illinois State Green Team to the international “Greening of the Campus Conference” that is held annually at Ball State University in Indiana. Green Team is an advisory committee that works to improve Illinois State’s environmental sustainability. When asked if a representative would be sent to the conference, Chuck Scott, Executive Director of Facilities Management and Green Team Chair stated that they could not afford to go. Believing that the conference would inspire and educate Green Team about initiatives to improve environmental stewardship at Illinois State, SEAC has taken it upon themselves to raise the $110.00 registration fee.

The “Greening of the Campus” is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together representatives from universities internationally to share information on environmental issues and learn how to lessen the environmental impact of college campuses. According to their website, “the campus community can become a ‘green’ model for society as a whole by gathering and sharing this information.”

Green Team was created in 2001 at the recommendation of former President Boschini's Environmental Task Force to “facilitate improvement in Illinois State’s environmental performance.” Green Team has representation from all four vice-presidential areas. In their annual report, Green Team “identifies a set of campus priorities and a plan for addressing these priorities.” SEAC believes that the “Greening of the Campus” conference will be an excellent opportunity for Green Team to learn from other universities who are vastly ahead of Illinois State in their environmental sustainability initiatives.

SEAC has been working with Green Team and supports their efforts for making Illinois State a more environmentally friendly place.
